Scientific research is now showing what we always believed: that organic food is much better for you. Organic milk is higher in omega 3 fatty acids, and higher in vitamins E and A – boosting the immune system, acting as powerful antioxidants and protecting against cardiovascular disease. Non-organic food contains additives which can make the body susceptible to heart disease, osteoporosis, migraines and hyperactivity. Non-organic food may contain residues of the 400 chemical pesticides routinely used in conventional farming. The UK government has recently found unacceptably high levels of these residues in some foods: including baby food, spinach, dried fruit, bread, apples, celery and potatoes. Organic farming strictly prohibits the use of genetically modified (GM) food, and antibiotics in farm animals: there is growing concern about the effect of antibiotics in meat on human health.

The UK government has stated that organic farming is better for wildlife, causes lower pollution from sprays and produces less carbon dioxide and less dangerous wastes. The trees, hedges and wide field-edges on organic farms provide habitats for wildlife and for natural predators such as beetles, spiders and birds which control pests. In organic farming, the preservation of healthy soil is paramount. At Daylesford, we combine organic production with sustainability. Our animals live naturally, free from drugs and from chemicals. Fertilising the soil and crops is also done naturally, as is pest control. We are especially proud of the environmental benefits of our strict adherence to the best in organic practice.

All organic farms and food companies are inspected at least once a year and have to adhere to strict organic standards of operation.

Organic food is the most frequent choice of top chefs and food experts. It is believed that because organic farmers tend to put their animals under less stress, giving them the freedom to roam and feed on a natural diet, and – crucially – to mature at their own pace without chemicals and artificial growth promoters, the animal is healthier and therefore, the meat is tastier. Organic fruit and vegetables also grow at their own pace and have a lower water content, so that their natural flavour is not diluted.
